crue vs. gnr

So today I had to give my first lesson at the saint paul school of rock. I had to give a bass lesson because nobody wants to teach bass so I took one for the team and said I’d do it. I got there and the delightful staff showed me the rules/regulations for teaching at this establishment and then I got a room, tuned up and was ready for action. The child I had today was normally the student of a faceless, not-yet-made-my-acquantance gentleman named Brian. The student’s name was “Miko” and he appeared to be approximately 13-14 years of age. I am one hundred percent sure that I am spelling his name wrong but it’s pronounced “Mee-ko.” What an awful name for a boy or really anyone for that matter. He donned a “neff” shirt (some sort of terrible skateboard company), athletic shorts (I was informed later that he had to go to baseball practice after the lesson) and had shortish brown hair. He entered the room, literally said zero things to me, unpacked his instrument and begun to play. I was like “Hi, I’m Jack. I’m subbing for Brian today.” To which he responded “hi” and continued to lethargically play bass. I was informed earlier that he was working on the songs “Kickstart my Heart” by Motley Crue and “Dust and Bones” by Guns n’ Roses. So then (already kind of knowing) asked this dude what he was working on. He responded by saying the 2 songs I have previously mentioned. So I was like “Ok, let’s play through them and I’ll let you know how you’re doing.” He did a decently good job at both of the songs except he was lethargic and obviously did not like the Crue song that much. It was around this time when he seemed agitated for some unknown reason and then (after much prodding from myself) finally told me that “this isn’t even what we’re working on.” To which I though “Why the FUCK did you not tell me this at the beginning of the lesson when I asked you, you lunatic?” But I kept my cool and then asked him what they were working on for a second time to which he replied “recognizing intervals.” So I was pretty excited about that because I love intervals and the kid was actually really good at that. I tried being goofy and funny and talking about the importance of moving around onstage and how Axl Rose is a dick, but he just seemed so very aggravated that his beloved “Brian” was not teaching today. So, basically, he probably talked shit to his Mom and/or Dad after the lesson and I hope I don’t get shitcanned. Overall, an interesting experience, but I feel like I’ll get better/more organized at doing this shit. And hopefully the kids won’t be too terrified of me in the future.
